Has this ever happened to anyone else?

The brass nipple that connects the fuel line to the petcock has pulled out. If I push it back in it will stay for a while with out leaking but after an hour or so of riding I start smelling gas and sure enough the fuel line with the nipple in it has pulled out slightly and gas is seeping out! I'm a little uncomortable with fuel leaking that close to the spark plug.

Anybody know of any kind of gas proof epoxy?

    Aloha...Mike

There are many gas proof epoxies the real question is will they hold on brass? As a former epoxy product engineer I suggest you replace the petcock.

No never had one leak on me like that. There are repair kits you can get but like Fatboy I would replace it.

Went to the big HD Dealership by the airport, you could take all the other 3 dealerships in the state combined and still not equal the size of this one. After 25 minutes of waiting for the parts guy to place a rush order on the out of stock petcock I walked out. Went to the small dealer closer to my house to place the order and he actually had it in stock and at $30...$5 less than the big dealer wanted. Sometimes bigger is not always better!

On a less happy note I found out I had been running with a pretty much dry tranny, probably put about 2000 miles on it while dry. I think the idiots at the dealer (the one close to my house) had the bike in for service and drained the tranny and forgot to re-fill it. When I first got the bike from them I told them I thought the tranny was not shifting right, they said no its fine and since this was my first twin cam I thought ok maybe these trannys are different from what I'm used to. Filled the tranny and it shifts so smooth and quiet now. Didn't find any broken metal on the drain plug. Guess I'll find out in a day or so if I burned up any of the seals. I gotta say the pucker factor is kinda high on this one. :gah:

Holy manure Batman! I would have taken the receipt for the service and went right back to the dealer that forgot the tranny oil and get it filled AND Documented!!! You don't want to buy a tranny. That f n dealer should pay.

It's getting harder and harder to find anyone to do good work anymore. Drugs in the workplace, employers hiring unqualified personnel, etc., etc. Those kind of "mistakes" like what happened to you are happening with more frequency these days.

    It's a daggone shame . . .

Sir Rat, you did the right thing doing it yourself. Dealership would have probably tried to weasel out of it, causing you even more grief. I hope your seals and bearings are okay.

Yea there is no way the dealer would have taken the hit on this...I bought the bike (an '05) last December from them second hand with 8,600 miles on it. The previous owner had bought the bike new from them in '05 and had traded it in on a new bike. They did all the service on the bike from the time it was new until I got it. Since there is no longer any warranty to speak of, I did the 10,000 mile service myself which is when I discovered the tranny was basically dry. I think I got maybe an ounce or two at the most out of it when I tried to drain it. They will blame the lack of oil on the first owner. I kick myself in the ass for not at least checking the oil level earlier :banghead:

Just gonna ride it for now and deal with what ever happens as it happens. I should know in a few days if the seals are gonna hold.

Also gonna stop by that service department and lay a few choice words on the service manager :fight:

At least I don't have gas dripping down next to my spark plug anymore.

    Aloha...Mike

That is unbelievable about the oil. I agree with Josh about getting hard to get good service. Had a problem with a auto shop that we had change the tranny filter on the wife's car. The mechanic didn't put any oil back in it. It started shifting hard and at a stop on the way home the wife said it wouldn't go. The owner put oil in the tranny and said it was OK, no it was not. He wouldn't make it good. To make it worse he and his wife were friends of ours. Kind of soured that one. We eventually had to put a rebuilt tranny in it.
Some shops are good and I'll bet a shop like Paul's would be the opposite.

Just like with my Harley when I took it to the so called big dealer about my rotors. They said they were not that bad and the other dealer across town didn't mic them but rode it and said they were dangerous, course I knew that.

Good luck with the tranny. I think I would put Redline tranny oil in it. That pink stuff really clings to the gears and at least my two Harley tranny's run quieter.
    But, no oil thread here.

when ya do work or change fluids I put a piece of masking tape
with 710 written on it and put it on the ignition switch.

Reminds me to check and I only take it off after doing the service...

Distractions are the biggest problem. When I do a home inspection I always do it the same way every time starting at point A to point Z. When someone tries to pull me away wanting me to look at another room or something else I always say I'll get there in a bit but never move on until I'm done with my procedure.

When I change oil I always set the oil containers up in a row so if one still has oil in it I know where it still goes.

Yep it's from an old joke but take 710, turn it around you have Oil.

A few days ago I was having some work done at my local garage. A blonde came in and asked for a seven-hundred-ten. We all looked at each other and another customer asked, "What is a seven-hundred-ten?"

She replied, "You know, the little piece in the middle of the engine, I have lost it and need a new one." She replied that she did not know exactly what it was, but this piece had always been there.

The mechanic gave her a piece of paper and a pen and asked her to draw what the piece looked like. She drew a circle and in the middle of it wrote 710.

He then took her over to another car which had its hood up and asked "Is there a 710 on this car?"

She pointed and said, "Of course, its right there."

This is what she pointed to...
