nanabike3.jpg My father owned a harley davidson . aHe recently passed away and left his bike to me. I dont know much about harleys and was wondering if someone could help me to identify exactly what type of harley it is and how much its current value is. It runs fine and needs just a few minor repairs. Any help appreciated. Thank you, Pappasgirl:banghead:I know its a 1971 but thats it. AND THE VIN NUMBER.

    Great links Neil!

If you follow the last link Neil gave you and follow the links on the left to an earlier era, you might find what you're looking for. However, the link for 1971 shows an 8 digit serial number. Can you match it up there? If not, you might have some trouble selling it or getting it registered. Do you have the paperwork for it?

The Sportster has had a lot of customization done to it with a style that isn't very popular these days. It looks like it's been sitting in the back of the garage for a while. Does it start?

Oh, and the gas tank has two gas caps because it's a custom tank. It isn't going to do anything for the value.

yes it's a Ironhead sporty , you'll have to find someone that real is looking for one that old to get any good money for it , & you'll need good paper work & it should run good to even get about $1500 out of it all the custom work ie tank ,rear fender, handle bars ,realy dosent do any thing to help , unless you have all the orignal parts as well to go with it

I would get someone local that knows your bike area
to help you sell if that is what you want to do.

Be sure to change out the fluids if it has been sitting awhile before
    running and riding it around.

There are several people interested in that type of bike to customize,
Once you get the Model year then check local bike papers
ads, craigslist and ebay for similar models to
    get the price..

I'd have bought it for that. We do not get any older bikes here in jersey, the dealer has only been here for 5 maybe 6 years at the most.
Would have like an older model.

Earlier this year I sold a 1990 first edition Fatboy on ebay to a guy in Italy. Don’t know how much it cost him to ship it there. Don’t even know if it ever made it.

Looks nice, shame the bloke did not even get back to you to tell you it had arrrived.

I paid £2300 ( about 3700 USD )for my 2004 883XL Sportster with 4000 miles on it. I had not wanted to spend much more that $3000 USD max, that is why I was looking for an older bike. Ah well too late now, and I am happy with the bike I have

That is good to know. He was asking 3,500.00 GBP = 5,809.36 USD but I knocked him down on the price ;)

Just seen another today on the island I am on at the moment, ( Alderney)
It is also 2004, with 3500 miles on it. He is asking £2750, so that works out about the same as you say 2,750.00 GBP = 4,563.69 USD
