For Charlie46: Horrible sound coming from my 103 Rushmore motor

    Moved to new thread for Charlie 46

    I don't know how to start a new thread,so I'll pose my question here. What ,if anything can be done to stop that horrible sound coming from my 103 Rushmore motor when it's idling and warm(worse with the hms enabled)?

    Seems like the best way to get rid of that knocking is to raise the idle up to 1100. Of course had to order a Power Vision to be able to do that. Talked with Bob at fuel moto, said my PCV couldn't do it alone.$$$$ But got a good deal on their billet air cleaner,annee waay $$$

    You can disable the ETIMS stuff if that bothers you probably with the power vision.

    As far as any other noises, it shouldn't be making any knocking sounds

    The valve train is famous for making ticking noises and some of that is
    coming from the clatter from the rocker arm supports. There is a company that
    makes inserts that are known to really bring that noise down.

    The knocking sound is widespread among Rushmore owners.Disabling theETIMS is easy,by pushing forward on the throttle twice for 5 seconds each time and almost eliminates it. But bringing the idle up to 1100 quieted a friends of mine down. He has a Power Vision on his so, That's the way I'm going. Manually increasing the idle on my bike quiets it down so it should work. Fingers crossed. Between the PV2 and the Air cleaner I should gain some performance.

    Higher idle = more heat, more fuel burn in city traffic. Your choice, but I'd take the noises.

    The baggers with the water cooled lowers tend to magnify the
    sound, my 110 isn't loud, I would advise you to have the lifters
    checked out, HD's lifters are crap from the factory and fail quite
    often, they could be the source of your noise.

    If and when you replace them get the SNS lifters, better made
    and quieter. Put in the rocker lockers at the same time and
    that generally quiets down the Twin Cam...

    Got the new Power Vision from Fuel Moto installed Yesterday. Adjusted idle from 1k to 1100, silent, (more normal) sounding now. Also installed their performance air cleaner. Waiting for weather to allow a test ride. Also, HRK, a friend has a 2015 110 and his was noisey at idle also. He did the same to his bike to quiet it down.

    Go to you tube search'fixing noise in twin cam Rocker Lockers' Interesting. The recording at the end is exactly what I'm hearing in mine. Rocker Lockers on order.!

    Just test rode bike after installing rocker lockers..still sounds like shirt at idle. Ser idle at 1100 to help quit it down.%#=×+!@

    It's possibly two other things, you'd need someone to listen
    to help diagnose it, the lifters on the TC engines are junk quite
    a bit of failures, the solution is to replace them with SNS lifters

    The other is the compensator, the one HD put on the 103 doesn't
    hold up well over time, more so on upgraded engines, most replace
    it with the SE compensator.

    I know if you go to the dealer they will say "they all do that'

    BTW you didnt get new hearing aids did you, my neighbor did
    and ended up having to take them out when he rides said it picks
    up everything and magnified it so sounds were worse to him than
    to those without hearing aids.

    Haven't gotten hear aids. New 103s
    Rushmores came withh SE comps. EVERY one I know with a 14 or 15 rushmore has this noise. Sounds almost like a diesel. H D says normal. 'friends 15 cvo did it from day 1. Complained first time he started it...normal they said

    I have an inexpensive mechanics stethoscope got at
    autozone or some store you can start up the engine
    and listen to the internals by moving the pickup tube
    around, it blocks out all other sounds.

    It would be one way to try and isolate the noise.

    My 16 doesn't do it like you say, it has some ticking
    sounds at specific rpms but not a diesel sound.

    The sounds do get multiplied with the lowers that
    we can't remove and the fairings, kind of bounces it
    around.

    The three known culprits on TC's (rushmore or not as its
    the exact same engine) are 1) Rocker Arms, 2) Compensator, 3) lifters,
    4) they all do that LOL.

    Ha Ha.. I drained the primary,only 32 oz. of Lucas Synthetic came out. I put in 38 oz. H-D 20-50 fossil I had in the garage. Purrs like kitten with the heat mngmnt disabled. Will not go to that shop again.

    Yeah, that is something I've noticed, too, that some shops have no clue what the oil capacity is on different bikes. Seen it from indy shops as well as H-D ones over the years. Amazingly lazy, or cheap? Or afraid of overfilling? Whatever.

    The important takeaway is to check your oil after anyone changes it, or do it yourself.

    And check your tire pressures while you're at it!

    I got tired of the noise in my roadglide .s&s lifters in it and push rods .baker comp and adjuster very much quiet now .
