Well boys, I guess it was coming sooner or later. When I come to a stop so does motor. When I start it up, it idles erratically and dies. There's no vacuum leaks.

I figure I should take the carb off and disassemble and clean. Or?

Long story short - found the problem - corroded regulator plug. Not sure how to go about repairing this so it doesn't happen again.

    I would replace it.
Don't want to get away from the house and have another problem with it.

I don't want to have to replace the stator & regulator just because the plug is bad, (still fairly new and made by Cycle Electric, USA) but I can't find just a replacement plug in any of my catalogs. I believe I could wire in a new plug if I could find one, and then sillycone it in so it won't leak.

Means I have to take out the left side of the motor down to the stator to get to the inside female half of the plug. Man, what really sux is that we have several beautiful riding days coming up. Zero chance of rain. It's been mostly rainy the past several weeks.

BTW, I did take the carb off, disassembled it and cleaned it, put it back on. It looked pretty good.

I'm thinking that I didn't install the plug correctly when I got the charging kit. Probably should have pushed the inside part of the plug through the hole in the block farther so the end would protrude enough for the outer plug to seal properly. Shouldn't have to use sillycone. Just a thought.

Your not going to find just a plug, for the stator or regulator...not a place for splicing...replacement is the only real fix...you can try what cowboy said to get you through this season....or find a old regulator and stator cut the plugs off and splice it for a temporary fix...splicing will add resistance, not really recommended ....good luck...

Guess I'll have to contact Cycle Electric and get a new 22 amp charging system. That is just so f****d.

Caught a break today, boys, thanks to Tattoo. Took the old charging system out of the bike in about an hour and a half and took the parts to Tattoo. He found me a brand new 32 amp stator & regulator for less than $120. I'm using my old rotor as it's a heavy duty one and still in very good condition. Going in the shop right now to put everything back together and maybe later, if I'm not too tired, go for a night ride. So, the down time is only going to be a day. Way:cool:

It turns out that the plug actually shorted out. On closer inspection I could smell the fried metal & rubber. I was told by the guy who sold me the new parts that the plug had probably backed out a bit - just enough for the plug to arc and burn. Apparently, (I was told), this was a common occurence in older bikes.

There are two solutions to prevent this from happening again. I can use a sillycone adhesive to "glue" the plug together or find one of those spring steel clips that bolt to the side of the block and then slide it over the plug to hold it in. I'm going with the sillycone adhesive as I have some on hand.:D

pushed my inner plug through quite a ways. good full seal, and my regulator holds the plugs together. you can't remove my plug without loosening the regulator. used the same super rtv that was recommended for my cases to help hold the plug and seal it in the case.

:cool:Nice to catch a break every now and then:D(So I've been told anyway :roflmao:) Lube the plug a bit,it'll make it a little easier to push through...I've used a pair of pliers to help with a little extra pushing power...

Yeah, just squirted a little WD40 in the hole and it slid right in. Boy, sounds kinda kinky, eh? Was too tired to finish it - crashed around midnight. Always takes longer to put things back together than to take them apart!
Ran the regulator wire thru the frame.

Finished up this morning and now going out for some coffee over at Tattoos shop. Looks to be a fine day to ride - 20% chance of showers or less, 90 degrees.

Don't think there are going to be any 5000 post marathons anymore - don't take as long to do things!:D

I remember those daggone luvbugs when I was last down in bayou country. Lots of croaking frogs and slithery snakes in the road at night, too.

Yesterday morning I buttoned up the rest of the left side of the motor and headed out to Tattoos shop. He stays busy. I saw no less than a dozen bikes there and several ATV's, lawn mowers, weed eaters, you name it. Plus there were 2 shovel & 1 evo motor on the bench getting rebuilds. He eventually wants to do only bikes, but there's gold in those other machines he tells me. Saturday is his short day at the shop, so I went in search of Dinky's Dungeon, a local biker bar he told me about. Nice country roads everywhere. Pulled up to the Dungeon around the crack of noon. Nobody there, so I sat down at one of the picnic benches out front admiring the old cars off to the side. A guy comes up in a pickup. It's Dinky. He lets me in the place and we sit around trading lies for a while. Then I ride some more on some smooth country roads. Rode to Tattoos crib and hung out there for a few hours, then rode some more. Discovered a bunch of new roads and got home around 6. Logged over a hundred miles and had a great day. The new parts worked perfectly.

The heat don't bother me much - it's the humidity. Always soupy around here. I was once told long ago if you added up the temp & humidity and it came to more than 150, that was known as the "misery index". I wuz looking for a smily face with sweat drops popping out all over. Guess this will do.
