Good morning, I ride Yamaha 2005 1100 V star this bike has 40,000 miles. I went to start the bike and the starter would not engage. It would spin with a zinging noise. I'm thinking starter my mechanic thinks it might be something internal, he has not seen the patient yet. Any ideas.
    Thanks, Ronnie

Disconect the battery and pull the starter. Put the starter on the floor stand on it put jumper cable ground on the starter and touch the positive to the starter post. The gear should jump out and the starter should turn. The gear shouid be in good condition and free on the shaft. This info is general info it might differ a little on that starter. your mechanic should be able to tell from there. Hope this helps Later Ole Ted.

Some time you'll have to ground the starter as well

How is your battery's strength? Known good? I had a Yamaha XS750 about 30 years ago, and if the battery was low the starter would not engage. Could it be that simple?

I wouldn't bet on anyting "internal", unless I was a mechanic looking for work....just sayin!

Thanks for the info. Batt seems strong, will be worth checking out. We will get on this tomorrow. I trust this mechanic.
