After I went out and added to my collection of speeding tickets yesterday (this one is 15 over) to prove I like to have fun with my 124" in a fxr.. Runs great! Lots of fun. I broke a wire on my coil, then my battery, that I have been nursing for months decided to take a dump on the side of the road. After finding a jump, my starter started sticking with a little smoke.. Trucked the bike home, went and got a new battery figuring that the old battery had shorted out and just went whaco on was all it was. New battery,, starter stuck again,,this time lots of smoke. New dead battery.

check the solenoid for bad contacts. they will get so bad that when they arc, they will weld them selves together........all copper in there, easy to weld..........

Yep pulled the plunger, checked and cleaned the contacts. Not bad I've seen it way worse. (Sense that's were the smoke was comin from) Gona run up to the store and get some marshmallows in case it does it again.. What would cause it to do that? With a dead battery then a new one?
    Thanks

a weak battery doesnt have the power to throw the solenoid correctly....it is slow. the contacts arc but arc longer due to the slowness of the plunger......

After replacing throttle and Idle cables on my 1987 FLHTC yesterday I had the bike buttoned up and ready to start with fairing and saddle bags back on. I probably rode the bike 5 or 6 different times yesterday as I was having trouble getting the bike to idle properly.

So I went to start the bike with the choke out and the engine started but the starter motor would not disengage even after I turned off the ignition. This went on for a couple of minutes until it started smoking and just as I was about to cut the positive cable to the battery I twisted the throttle and the bike came to a stop along with the starter. Pretty scary situation as I was worried about an electrical fire and the full gas tank above the starter.

I did replace my solenoid about 4 years ago as the solenoid and starter are separate on this bike. Do you think it's the same problem with the a faulty solenoid? Any suggestions?
