I need a second (or third) opinion about primary fluid. I normally run Red Line ATF in my primary's but, the only place in town that sells Red Line products doesn't sell ATF (automatic transmission fluid, I know you knew that, just tryin to be thorough). The stuff the mechanic in the back recommended Red Line MTL. Manual transmission - manual transaxle lubricant. SAE 70W 80 API GL-4 Gear oil is what the bottle says. This is the only red line product for primary's they carry for red line. Is this for real? I'm just smellin a rat when the bottle says GEAR OIL 70-80 for my primary. Thanks

I guess I am the same as you in the aspect that I like to HD stuff when it comes to fluids. Not that I think that they are better, but it is just what is recommended so that is what I use. Not only that, I get a nice discount on everything from harley except for labor when I go, so what I end up paying is not that much more expensive anyways.

Nope.... no stinkin rat;) The MTL is the same fluid they sell in another bottle with V-Twin Primary Fluid label on it. Same thing with BelRay Gear Saver 80wt and their Primary fluid. Same stuff, just a different label.
I've been thinking about switching to MTL from ATF in mine

I'm starting to change my mind about all this oil stuff.

Don't have to have the absolute best on the market.
I do change my oil often and keep it clean.

I ran my bikes for years with just dino oil

I want to walk in the store and pick the bottle up off the shelf.
Ain't gonna order something everytime I need it.

They don't have it on display except for the HD dealer in Vancouver Washington, Columbia Harley.
I refuse to use the HD SYN 3 oil and I don't run dyno oil any longer.
Red Line or Amsoil. One thing I hope is that this don't start another oil war, to many of those at other motorcycle sites over the years.

I am a amsoil dealer, don't know how much is left on a 11 yrs contract I bought at 25.00 a year.
But I have to order it and pay shippin and put it on a credit card.
Got a Indy shop 30 miles up the road that carries Amsoil.

I like the Syn 3 oil from the dealer.

Also like the Castrol 20-50 V-Twin Harley oil Walley World started carrying.
And I like Castrol Oil too.

And don't sweat it, I'm not starting a oil war. I hope anyway.

Just making a statement that you can run other oils if you can't git what you think is the best.

    Chime in! Ding ding ding

Mobil 1 Vtwin -JMO Best on the market, the benchmark for others.
    Amsoil Good stuff
    Redline Good Stuff
Any Vtwin oil (Oil for air cooled engines) that meets HD's spec for the oil will work.

Change on time, new filter, and keep it fresh and even Dyno oil is find, HD 360 is fine

Syn3 is on the market because tons of bike owners were taking the bikes to
non HD shops (INDY) or doing it at home because Dealers were having service people scare them into using HD360 or voiding the warranty, all bull.....

Basically if the HD service manual says for this temp range use 20E-50 then use it.

Syn doesn't break down as early in the temp cycle as dyno, and it's hotter than hades here in the summer so I put in Syn Mobil1, reminds me I have to go to pick up some this evening. Putting the Awl, kewler back on the softail,
