Can anyone help me out here? I just bought a used 2005 Road King, 8,000 miles, to look at it you'd think it was brand new. But ever since I drove it out of the shop, I've been hearing this tapping noise that sounds like a valve tap. I thought it might be an exhaust leak instead, but it's apparently not it. The tapping sound seems to be coming from the front cylinder, don't notice any noise from the rear one. I took it back to the shop to have them check it out, but the basic answer I got was, " I don't hear anything unusual" and "don't worry about it, it's normal" Two different people have commented to me when I showed them the bike - basically saying "is that valves" and "should they be making that noise". Anybody got a suggestion as to what the tapping might be?

Yep, Harleys make a lot of top-end noise. The first thing I thought of before I read the whole post was to take it in for an opinion, but I see you have already done so.
Its still under warranty right? So relax. IF you really want to quite things down, it will cost you a few pennies; go out and buy a “fueling” oil pump and one of their cam plates. Makes things a lot more quite. I’m certain that Direct Parts can get you hooked up on it..
    Good luck.

    Randy,

Bottom line....if it's under warranty, why beat yourself up over it? Make the "stealership" live up to their end of the bargain! They don't have a problem letting you know when the payment is late, do they?!!

Did you check to see if was stock before buying it? It may have a torque cam with fast opening ramps that cause a tapping sound in the rocker boxes.
